If he wins the FedEx Cup, then the discussion will turn to a deafening roar – Webb Simpson will have had the best year on the PGA Tour and should be Player of the Year. Sure – some will mention Rory McIlroy and his dominating performance in the U.S. Open – record-setting and iconic in the history of that venerable tournament. But in terms of a full...
Jay Busbee has the article here. I’ll remind everyone that athiests make up only 8% of America, yet they insist on making a nuisance of themselves shouting down anyone that rejects their tired nihilistic world view. Well I’m proud to be Catholic and to love God as well. Webb, just start a blog and don’t allow comments. That and hang in there. They...
Though fall doesn’t begin until later this month, we here at AWITP celebrated the end of summer with visits to Paramount Country Club (formerly Dellwood) in Rockland County and St. George’s Golf and Country Club on Long Island. We’ll be doing a series of articles on Paramount showing “The Architect’s Progress” – several...
Ever since I saw the kid play at Wake Forest, I knew he was sublime. Quiet dignity, unquenchable fire, rock-hard faith, and the ability to let go of the setbacks – Golf, God, and Country, that’s Webb Simpson. He reminds me of Dan Jenkins in that regard… Back then Webb was leading Wake Forest to a triple-overtime playoff victory over Baylor at the...
MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ – With a golf game uglier than an Orlando Perkins waitress, your author led his punchless NYC writers golf team to a fourth consecutive epic fail against the Philadelphia golf writers, who routinely mule kick us back to the Manhattan curbside with a resounding thud during Forsgate Country Club’s annual Writer Cup tournament between the...
I need the break. While I love the contract work in the entertainment industry, the litigation is for the birds…the buzzards, vultures and harpies to be exact. “Now Jay,” Professor Steele once said is his deep, mellifluous voice, “Never forget. The reward for good work is more work.” Thanks for that. If anyone else except Professor...
It may not be the greatest or most historic, but it’s definitely the coolest, most unlikely, and most memorable par in Road Hole history. Tony Korologos, the Media Guru, chief mucky-muck of the Golf Space, and AWITP contributor, made four on the 17th at The Old Course at St. Andrews in style. After sniping one off the Old Course Hotel observatory with a...
FOREST HILLS, NY – There’s a new Mario dominating the food scene in New York City, so move over Mario Batali, you’ve got company at the top of the food chain. Meet Mario Savvas, restauranteur and bon vivant, and his Nick’s Bistro on Metropolitan Avenue in Forest Hills is giving both Manhattan and Astoria a run for their drachmas. In Spanish...
Meet Steve Ciliberti. Steve is a two-time member of the Virginia Coomonwealth Potomac Cup golf team who routinely and resoundingly defeats players much better than him on paper. He’s also got some of the best pizza south of he Mason-Dixon line. Steve is the manager of the Reston, Virginia Ledo’s Pizza, a chain which has set itself aprt in the vastly...
The warm glow of the Sportlight from a great golf weekend dimmed twice with the passage of a pair of good souls. We lost Norm Swenson, 64, great amateur golf champion and Bill Charest, 43, champion sports fan far too soon. Norm Swenson was one of the greatest amateur players of our generation. He won championships at a whopping 12 different country clubs throughout...
Jack Nicklaus says 12 hole courses are the answer to bringing more people to golf. No it’s not. Yes, it takes too long t play a round of golf – but that’s because too many people don’t play the correct set of tees and agonize over every shot like it’s the U.S. Open. Ryan Ballengee at NBC has this excellent rejoinder to Nicklaus. From the...
This weekend, while I’m working on my U.S. Open preview, (and my golf swing), Tony Korologos will be handling live coverage duties on the PGA Tour. Tony is at the Byron Nelson as part of the blogger experiment. Check out his tweets getting posted on scoreboards around the course!
So check in here and with Tony at Hooked on Golf Blog all tournament long.
Everyone knows we laid Seve to rest yesterday, but the sports writing world also lost a true great yesterday, Bill Gallo of the New York Daily News. We’ll have one day of radio silence to mourn them both: Seve the swashbuckler and Gallo the gallant. See you in Heaven someday. Save room in the foursome for me at Valderrama, and I’ll get you on the Shore...
My dear friend and colleague Hank Gola of the Daily News – by far and away the best golf writer of all the greater-NYC papers combined – went to Venezuala for vacation. Here is his laugh-out-loud assessment. From the article: “I asked the caddy master if it was going to rain all day. “Media hora,” he told me, which means half an hour. It...
In a great move for themselves, for golf, and great golf course architecture, Tournament Set-up genius Mike Davis has been elevated to Executive Director of the USGA. From the USGA announcement: “Davis becomes the seventh executive director in the 116-year history of the Association, after serving as senior director of Rules and Competitions since 2005…...
