Quintessential golf architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. will be honored tomorrow night at the 2012 Ellis Island Medals of Honor ceremony, a high recognition given to remarkable Americans who exemplify outstanding qualities in both their personal and professional lives while continuing to preserve the richness of their particular heritage. Over 100 Americans descended...
Let’s have MORE than just a golf clap for Todd Edelman, Director of Business Development at Forsgate Country Club, because he’s been featured in this month’s issue of Golf Business Magazine. Music lover, outstanding golfer, father of the year candidate – his little daughter is adorable – and now golf business exec non pariel. Way to go...
Cybergolf will run my piece in the morning but here’s a snippet: “Watson’s faith and grace stand in stark contrast to Tiger Woods, who threw clubs, swore, and snarled acidly all week as he sulked his way to a dismal 5-over finish. The comparison is one of sincere value versus insincere value – Woods’s media-constructed image as a crass...
As usual, Steve Elling is putting on a dominating Tiger-esque performance (As a writer! Not a porn wannabee!) in the best review of Jaime Diaz/Hank Haney’s book on Tiger, “The Big Miss.” From the article: “9. Toilet humor and Tiger This is not a real revelation, since Woods’ comedy leanings are scatological and sophomoric at best and his...
We’ll go dark for a day to honor the memory of pre-eminent sports writer Furman Bisher, who passed away this weekend at the ripe young age of 93. Furman covered sixty-two Masters tournaments. That’s even more than venerable Dan Jenkins. Like Art Spander, Bisher was much mroe than a golf writer. He covered every Super Bowl except two, as well as the World...
Golf Digest senior writer Jaime Diaz has been named the recipient of the 2012 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. The San Francisco native, 58, will be honored April 4 at the 40th Golf Writers Association of America Annual Spring Dinner and Awards ceremony at Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Augusta, Ga. So I’m working on my Chambers Bay write-up, but I have to heap loads of praise on those that help me get the job done…and that means Daniela (pronounced Dan-ee-YELL-uh), Lanae (pronounced Luh-NAY) and the good folks at the Seattle-Tacoma airport Enterprise rental agency. We love professionalism and problem solving here at AWITP, and they were cheerful...
And while the shepherds lay in their field an angel of The Lord appeared to them and they were afraid. But he said “fear not for I bring you glad tidings of great joy. For today in the city of David a savior is born and he will save you from all your sins.” Then, suddenly the sky was filled with a great light and host of heavenly angels appeared and sang...
According to legend, the great Trojan War hero Hector once rallied his troops with a short, but sweet pep talk. It was something along the lines of, “All my life I’ve lived by a simple code – honor the gods, love your woman, and defend your country.” That pretty much sums up golf writer and Texas philosopher Dan Jenkins’s life in a...
FOREST HILLS, NY – Forget the hockey player from Pittsburgh, the Italian video game character from Donkey Kong, and the former governor of New York, the real Super Mario is Mario Savvas, restauranteur extraordinaire from Forest Hills, because the hits just keep on coming at Nick’s Greek Bistro. Now Mario, Uncle Andy, Singh Jerry, and all the gang at...
Who needed Tiger? We saw a record setting U.S. Open, a miraculous resurrection at the British Open and breakout stars at the PGA Championship and the FedEx Cup, which was exciting for once. I know, I know…Bill Haas won the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup, but I’m still going with Webb Simpson as my choice for Player of the Year. Two wins, twelve top...
Steve Czaban is a flat-out Thanksgiving Day hero. Get this – the Voice of the Great American Sportsman – decided he wanted to build a backyard football field. So he did it in the most obsessive-compulsive way possible! We’re talking golf tees and kite string. We’re talking mowing patterns! We’re talking 24 cans of spray paint. He truly...
MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ – Annika Sorenstam has still got the magic, as hundreds of delighted fans got to see first-hand when she and PGA Tour star Brad Faxon visited Forsgate Country Club to host the club’s annual Charity Classic last month. Everyone came away deeply impressed by Annika the person as well as Annika the professional golfer on every level. She...
WILLIAMSBURG – It’s time to throw up our rock hands and give a “Woo hoo hoo!” for Chuck Klosterman and his new novel The Visible Man, the seventh book by America’s sharp, young rock music critic, pop-culture expert, zeitgeist psycho-analyst, and vicarious party buddy. It was a good day all around for Klosterman. He released his book...
It’s time for Jay’s Birthday celebrations, and this years festivities will be as much fun for you as for me. We’ll have golf and music – what else? Golf will be in upstate New York so I can also celebrate with my dad (I haven’t done that in ages!) and the rest of my family – dinner is steak al cicco at the Savoy. Golf will be at...
