Forza Italia! Italy’s Silvia Cavalleri wins LPGA event

Italy’s Silvia Cavalleri deflated all Mexico and the ESPN Deportes crew by defeating World Number One Lorena Ochoa in the LPGA’s Corona Merelia Championship.  Paraguay’s Julieta Granada was third. Forza Italia, Sempre!  She became the fist Italian to win an LPGA event. First the U.S. Amateur (attaboy Edoardo Molinari!), then World Cup and now the...

Brittany Lincicome wins Ginn Open

***Update***
Brittany Lincicome shot an even par 72 and watched as both Lorena Ochoa and Laura Davies plummeted beneath her as Lincicome claimed her second LPGA title.
A resurging Juli “Jinks” Inkster also shot an even par 72 to vault into fourth place along with Nicole Castrale.  Ochoa shot 5-over 77 and Davies carded a disappointing 7-over 79.

LPGA drug and steroid testing omits HGH

This is the worst news we could have had. It looked like the LPGA was going to set a benchmark; seize the initiative from the PGA, lead the charge against steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. But even though 82 different substances are banned, the greatest scourge of the generation, HGH, is noticably absent. HGH should have been the first thing banned...

Steve Czaban on Pressel v. Wie

everyone keeps saying Pressel 1, Wie 0.  I have to keep reminding everyone that in my opinion is Pressel 2, Michelle 0.  Morgan won the U.S. Amateur as well a sa Women’s major.  Michelle is sold to us as a Lady Tiger, but she never won the Women’s Amateur…or the Women’s Jr., let alone three of each. Czabe has come to the same conclusion:...

Whaddya know! Morgan’s getting major props!

***Update on my last post*** Morgan has been everywhere today! Yes the media HAS been crowning her with the “youngest ever mantle” and the press outpouring has been every bit as widespread as her appeal with the fans. I am pleasantly surprised. I more than half expected a tepid response, but the extra kick in the “buzz” must be the age factor...

Paraguay routs field, wins women’s World Cup

The U.S. team of Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst shot 67 on Sunday, but finished in second place at 286, seven shots back of the winner, Paraguay.  Julieta Granada and Celeste Trioche shot a 7-under 65 in the better ball to run away and hide from the field.  South Korea finished third. Team golf – it’s interesting, a great change of pace from the incessant...

Memo from the Sports Desk: a FedEx Cup idea – stableford, match play and medal

The news that the PGA Tour may lose the International (and indeed a Denver tour stop altogether) is upsetting. The players and fans loved the venue and the unique scoring system was a welcome refresher to tired old medal play AGAIN. Anthony Cotton reports that one of the causes of the rift was the International’s unwillingness to become part of the FedEx Cup...

Michelle still putting the I in Wie

It’s not a dog and pony show, it’s a shell game. A dog and pony show has the potential of being true, if a little campy and delivered with some slick marketing. A shell game on the other hand is exactly what “Michelle Wie against reality the men” has become – a false bill of goods. Let’s debunk a few of the myths the mainstream...

LPGA adds drug testing – it’s Carolyn Bivens’ best decision yet

The AP reports that in 2008 the LPGA Tour will begin testing athletes for steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.  Specifics as to testing will be determined over the next six to nine months – and therein will lie the truth as to whether testing will actually have some teeth or simply be lip service. This is the best decision Carolyn Bivens has made as...

Lorane Ochoa in TOC Rout, cinch for Player of the Year?

Lorena Ochoa ran away and hid, winning the LPGA Tournament of Champions by a record ten shots. Did she also steal the Player of the Year honors from Annika Sorenstam? One Sporting Life writer thinks she has a good shot. Joe Logan seems to agree with me that Phil Mickelson’s Collapse was the most terrible moment of 2006. Here’s is the rest of his season...

Memo From the Sports Desk: Michelle Wie Turns Seventeen Today
