Women’s Golf – Lorena Ochoa takes number one from Annika Sorenstam

Brent Kelley over at Golf.about.com reports that Lorena Ochoa took over the top spot from Annika Sorenstam.

This is great news for Women’s Golf. The game is far more dramatic and compelling when anybody has a chance to win rather than “ho Hum, another title for ____.”

“Women’s golf hasn’t been this exciting in years” said Sharon Killeen who was watching the Zurich Open from the grill room of a Westchester golf club. “The new crop of players are exciting to watch and likable to boot. There’s no prima donnas!” she said enthusiastically. “Nothing against Annika, but when one player dominates so totally, people tend to lose interst in the other players and in the game. It became Annika and whoever else the tide washed up for that particular week. Now you know there’s going to be a battle featuring several players you know and like. That’s why I watch, to see an exciting finish down to the wire.”

“This tournament (the Zurich) is downright boring. I couldn’t pick out half of these guys if didn’t tell me who they were, but the Women’s Tour has some recognizable stars that are young and will be around for a long time” echoed avid golf fan Santiago Veron. “Just as long as they don’t get greedy and screw it all up trying to rake in every last marketing dollar, we will have ourselves a good, family-oriented affordable product, which is what professional sports used to be about and should be again.  There is finally something top notch I can take my wife and kids to see that we can afford and don’t have to worry about swearing or spilled beer.”

For those of you scoring at home, despite not having competed on the LPGA tour in ages, Michelle Wie is still ranked 20th. The rankings are branded by Rolex.
