In Memoriam Furman Bisher

We’ll go dark for a day to honor the memory of pre-eminent sports writer Furman Bisher, who passed away this weekend at the ripe young age of 93.

Furman covered sixty-two Masters tournaments. That’s even more than venerable Dan Jenkins. Like Art Spander, Bisher was much mroe than a golf writer. He covered every Super Bowl except two, as well as the World Series, the Stanley Cup, the Atlanta Braves, and the NCAA Championship.

A pacific, genteel man, his writing reflected the grace and elegance of an earlier time. A time when athletes and journalists were friends and colleagues, not just uneasy allies.

So via con dios, Furman. Enjoy that tee time with Jesus, Grantland Rice, Herb Wind, and Bernard Darwin. I’m sure they’ll be the first of many up there to tell you how great you were down here.
