Video of the Week: Tom Doak on St. Andrews Beach

Here you go. This is what a golf course architect thinks about when he’s designing. It’s Tom Doak analyzing St. Andrew’s Beach. He was aided by Mike Clayton, Australia’s greatest golf writer and my Golf Observer colleague.
Note to Donald Trump and Turning Stone Casino: do you see a waterfall? A stained glass window? How bout that line “You have to build golf courses for the average golfer…try to do as little work as possible and use the land the best we can?” Nothing? Doesn’t resonate at all? Or can you just not hear it over the cha-chinging of the cash register and the slooshing of the casino chips?
Doak continues, “We moved almost no earth in the fairways. The contours of the land are just the way they’ve always been.”

Just like Ballyneal – winner, best new private course last year…and of the Jazzy Award for the same category.

Now if we just get Doak to start wearing black shirts and black slacks! That’s your Christmas present this year, Tom – a black golf shirt.  Maybe a Seize sur Vingt.  Come on, black looks great with green.
