High Pointe closes for 2009 season, Tom Doak loses 3rd course in 6 months

Ouch.  First we lose Beechtree, then we get , then Apache Stronghold closes, then this news from Traverse City, Michigan that High Pointe is closing.

From the article:

Golfers will find fewer options when they hit the links this spring amid tough economic times in northern Michigan.

High Pointe Golf Club, an 18-hole layout along M-72 in Acme Township, won’t open for the 2009 golf season. A posting on High Pointe’s Web site said the move is “due to difficult economic times in the country, especially Michigan … .”

Course owner Don Hayden was not immediately available for comment, but a company employee confirmed the closure Friday.

The course was among the early designs of now world-renown golf course architect Tom Doak, of Traverse City, whose notable courses include Pacific Dunes in Oregon and Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand.

High Pointe is the latest casualty among several courses in the Grand Traverse region.”

This is terrible.  Look at the great prices this course charged:  (click here for price list).  $80 in high season, $45-$60 in shoulder, for a Doak course.  Those were excellent, competitive prices for a really good course with a sterling pedigree. The same is true of Beechtree and Apache Stronghold. Bad luck comes in threes.
