Another Tom Doak Course Closes – Apache Stronghold Shuts down for present

No word on what the future may bring, but Apache Stronghold, an excellent Tom Doak design owned by the San Carlos Apache Indian Nation has temporarily shut it’s doors.

According to Golf Digest,  “A notice on the casino’s web site reads, “The Apache Stronghold Golf Course is closed until further notice. We apologize for the inconvenience.” The tribe hopes to reopen the course in a month or two, the Republic says.”

On Golf Club Atlas’s bulletin Board, Doak responded to inquiries by noting that the course will be closed 90 days.  Doak also shared rumors that his first solo design, High Pointe, might not open this year.

AWITP played the course back in 2006 with members of Bowling For Soup.  The course’s greatest assets are myriad holes designed in the flavor of those at National Golf Links of America, including a Biarritz and a Redan.

Late last year, Beechtree G.C. in Aberdeen, Maryland became the first Doak course to become a member of the NLE list. (No Longer Exist).  Read that story here:  The Last Sunset at Beechtree.
