From the House Comittee Hearings on Clemens, McNamee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – I’ll be reporting live today from the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform here and at Cybergolf.

As we break for a few minutes, it’s clear Roger Clemens’s credibility is eroding and his risk of perjury growing with every word. He has already been trapped several times by Committee members, despite repeated attempts by his lawyers to interject or respond to questions themselves. He had to try to explain how he told 60 minutes his lawyer said don’t talk to Mitchell, but then Clemens said he never was contacted and letters from MLBPA and Mitchell didn’t get to him. He had to explain why many people recall him being at Canseco party, but he and others don’t. Time and time again Clemens has not answered direct questions, has said he doesn’t remember, or has maintained his broad, non-specific denials.
Other than some grandstanding by Dan Barton of Indiana, who clearly took his time to castigate McNamee and then leave and not return, most House Committee members are skeptical of Clemens.

So far the biggest bombshell was dropped by Mark Souder of indiana, who recommended that since ownership and management seemed complicit in the cone of silence regarding helping Sen. Mitchell’s report, perhaps there should be further investigation, looking directly at what they may or may not have done to hinder the investigation. Other indications are that this will be the last hearing, but at least the door is open that if MLB’s drug problem continues, Congress won’t hesitate to act again.

Most importantly, Pettitte, Pettitte’s wife and Knoblauch all agree with McNamee that Clemens took steroids.

Tune in here and at Cybergolf for more later today and tomorrow.
