Off to New Hampshire for first Book Tour/Lecture – The McDonough Foundation

Thank you to the McDonough Scholarship Foundation for graciously extending  the invitation for me to speak to them on golf design at their yearly meeting and scholarship awards dinner.  My talk, entitled “How to Read a Golf Course,” will discuss great architects and their design concepts, but will also be the kickoff event on my own spring and summer tour of readings and lectures.

The real story here, though, is the great work of the McDonough Foundation.  For over 50 years they have supplied scholarships to young students who are employees of New Hampshire golf courses.  Since their inception in 1955, they have donated over $1.4 million dollars to help student-golfers who demonstrate the promise of academic success and civic duty get a chance to attend a great college. As the Foundation’s credo states, their primary purpose is to insure that “financial  concern alone should not deny anyone the opportunity for higher education.”  For the academic year 2007-2008 awarded $117,600 to 109 men and women representing 45 different New Hampshire golf courses.  The students attend 73 different colleges and universities, both state and private.

For more information, contact the McDonough Foundation at www.mcdonough.nhgolf.com, or write to them at 16 Salmon Street, Manchester, NH 03104.

My lecture will be at the stately Manchester Country Club (Donald Ross) on Thursday night.  While there, I’ll get a chance to play fabled Abenaqui, another great Donald Ross course, as well as some other New hampshire favorites like Portsmouth, so look for more coverage this week.

More good news:  my first book has been put on an accelerated publication schedule, April 1 of next year.  In support of its release, I’ll be reading this summer in New York, Hartford (twice), and Western Massachusetts, tour details will be released soon.  Here’s hoping we add Philly, Baltimore, and D.C..  Look for me in your town soon!
