Golf Weekend in Maryland

While the eyes of the golf world are fixed firmly on Sergio Garcia’s colorful outfits at Carnoustie, we can still go out and play golf as well as watch.

That’s exactly what I did.  The AWITP team has saddled up for a weekend in Maryland sandwiching the brilliantly designed Baltimore Country Club East Course (Five Farms) designed by A. W. Tillinghast between two public staples of the region, Blue Mash (Arthur Hills) and Whiskey Creek (Ernie Els).

So far, Five Farms is my favorite Tillinghast course.  Outstanding early American bunkering and shaping frame a heaving site.  The greens have excellent contours without being too fast for playing conditions.  I had the distance dialed in quite nicely, thank you very much, until 16…where I putted my fifty footer off the green and off the false front back down the fairway thirty yards.

I haven’t had to take a walk of shame that humiliating since my cousin made me wear a teal tux at his wedding – I mean since #1 at Royal New Kent in 2003.

Anyway, Blue Mash had some excellent greens too and had one of the best starts since Royal New Kent.  Full reviews later.
