Much like SI’s offerings for baseball, basketball, and football, this oversize history of the game in essays and pictorials is much more than just a coffee table conversation piece. It is the seminal review of where the sport of golf came from, where it’s been, and where it is going, seen through the eyes of the world’s greatest sporting magazine...
We interrupt this sports blog for a special announcement: Congratulations to my boys Bowling For Soup for releasing their latest album, “Sorry for Partyin'”. The boys are in the U.K. right now, the same place where they recorded their live CD/DVD “Live and Very Attractive,” but they’ll be back in the U.S.A. in November for an extended...
I’ll be on assignment covering the U. Maryland golf course’s 50th anniversary gala and the golf team reunion tomorrow, so I’ll take today to wish a big happy birthday to Tony Korologos of Hooked on Golf! Tony is one of the founding fathers of golf blogging, one of the ancient crew. He’s been around for the first hole-in-one at Ballyneal, the...
People might not think of Indiana as a place to jet off for a golf vacation, but golf writer Chris Clouser is doing his best to change that. Best known as the biogropher of pre-eminent golf architect Perry Maxwell, Clouser’s second book, “A Month of Saturdays” is a helpful guide to the best of public golf in the state of Indiana. The book is a...
Cybergolf ran my latest piece profiling Club Pro Kevin Roman of Atlanta, GA via Utica, NY. Kev beat the bloody snot out of me as a junior golfer. Oh well, that’s two pros that mopped the floor with me! (The LPGA’s Moira Dunn is the other, for those of you scoring at home.)
Welcome to the Honor Roll, Kevin!
Happy Birthday America! For a little perspective, I am continuing a tradition I started last year, by reprinting one of my favorite Fourth of July remembrances. For those of you scoring at home, I’ll also celebrate by playing golf with my dad. I have a poem by Harvard University and Trinity College’s own Sophie Wadsworth, poet emeritus. It’s called...
We’ll observe a day of silence for one of our favorite bloggers, Tom Kirkendall of Houston’s Clear Thinkers. Tom lost his mother, Margaret Kirkendall late last week. Tom posted a beautiful tribute for his mother written by his brother Matt. take some time to read it, post some comments, and send a prayer out to our compatriot in the blogging...
I think we have a winner for funniest video of the year: Texas Rockers Bowling For Soup have a hilarious tribute to Howard Stern Show’s Ba-Ba-Booey – Gary Dell’abate – throwing one of the worst first pitches ever.ÂÂ
He actually would have missed the broad side of a barn. Heck, he threw it behind the guys taking pictures!
GARDEN CITY, NY – Fifteenth-seeded Roger Hoit turned in a dominating performance in the first two rounds of match play of the Travis Invitational, defeating defending champion Michael Kelley, and two-time winner George Zahringer by a combined eight holes. “I’m exhausted,” he gasped as he sunk deeply into a chair. “They are two of the...
GARDEN CITY, NY – Garden City Golf Club truly was an emerald ‘neath the blissful skies Friday morning, as the sun shone as if it had just been born while the golfers contested the stroke play qualifier for the 99th Travis Invitational. Birdies were the coin of the realm as fifteen of the sixteen championship flight qualifiers shot level-par 73 or better...
Thank you to the McDonough Scholarship Foundation for graciously extending the invitation for me to speak to them on golf design at their yearly meeting and scholarship awards dinner. My talk, entitled “How to Read a Golf Course,” will discuss great architects and their design concepts, but will also be the kickoff event on my own spring and...
Congratulations to Rafi and Jeannette Cabrera! They eloped to Hawaii and got married on March 13th.
If you shout, shout for joy!
If you cry, cry tears of happiness,
If you lie, lie in each others’ arms,
and when you fight, fight for love!
Welcome to the Honor Roll!
With all the excitement of the Masters winding down, and the golf world having a fun, laid back, “me time” party at Hilton Head for the Heritage, I’m going to take the day off, and just thank Tony Korologos of The Golf Space for having the vision to run this network the way a great network of websites should be run. Tony’s talent as a web...
The Irish might complain that in reviewing an Irish golf book I should be quoting Yeats, not T.S. Eliot, but the man who had the humility to call Ezra Pound Il Miglor Fabbro – the better craftsman – had the perfect quote to describe Tom Coyne’s golfing walk around the entire circumference of Ireland. Only those who risk going too far can possibly...
Tom Coyne walked 1,400 miles around the entire circumference of Ireland, playing every seaside links. It took him fourmonths and lots of chits with his wife Allyson. Enjoy. It’s here. Slante, Tom, and welcome to the Honor Roll. Pull up a chair next to Kevin Cook. From the article: JF: Why do this in the first place? [Walk around all of...
