Amy Mickelson diagnosed with breast cancer, Phil takes leave from TOUR

The golf world was stunned today by the news that effervescent young Amy Mickelson, wife of popular TOUR player Phil Mickelson, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. According to the Associated Press, “The three-time major champion said Wednesday he will suspend his PGA Tour schedule indefinitely.
According to a release from Mickelson’s management company, his wife was to have more tests but begin treatment with major surgery as early as the next two weeks.” The full AP story is here.

Amy, one of the most visible figures on TOUR for her affable nature and all-American good looks, is revered by golf fans as the perfect match for her colorful, outgoing husband, and the couple have represented both themselves and the PGA TOUR with grace, dignity, class, and charm.  “Amy is almost as much an icon on TOUR as Phil, with fans interacting with her as much as Phil,” said Bob Heatley, a New York City golf fan.

Mickelson’s status for next month’s U.S. Open at New York’s Bethpage State Park is uncertain. The left-hander finished second to Tiger Woods in the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage. Mickelson has already pulled out of the Colonial, where he was defending champion.

The couple married in 1996 and has three children, ages 9, 7 and 6.  Cybergolf’s further coverage of the story is here.
