Ouch! More Sponsor Issues for PGA TOUR – Milwaukee Edition

Bad news: according to the Sports Business Journal – which is the only sports industry business journal you need to read, U.S. Bank “declined to exercise a three-year option beginning in 2010, so this is the sixth and final year of the bank’s title sponsorship of the Milwaukee event.” Croak said that the tournament “could not go on without a title sponsor,” and PGA Tour officials said that it is “unlikely the Tour would underwrite the event, even for one year.” Croak said that the Tour had “not given him a deadline but that the ‘critical time’ would be 60 to 90 days after the 2009 tournament ends on July 19.”

Gary D’Amato of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, one of the best golf writers out there, got executives to admit serious concerns about being vilified for sponsoring golf events as being lavish expenses, which they are not. Companies are concerned with public image perception in sponsoring golf events, but why is there no outcry over other sports?

Just remember the next time Washington tries to tell you everything is rosy and getting better, they could not be more horribly, horribly wrong.  Why do you think so much of the LPGA tour is abroad?
