Tom Watson Makes the Right Ryder Cup Picks

Though the selection show was longer and more useless than a Judge Judy marathon, U.S. Ryder Cup Captain made the best three selections with his at-large picks, choosing former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, past PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley, and plucky Hunter Mahan.

When the other choices are Chris Kirk, Brandt Snedeker, and Ryan Moore, you have to err on the side of experience. Nothing against those guys – quality golfers all – but with the loss of Dufner and Dustin Johnson, Tom Watson needed to replace experience with experience, not feel good stories. We already have three rookies – Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, and Jimmy Walker. The Ryder Cup is NOT the time for Flavors of the Week or feel good stories.

Webb Simpson rounds out the God Squad Pod – Webb, Bubba, Zach Johnson, and Hunter Mahan. Then you have Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, and Jordan Speith, work well together leaving Jim Furyk, Jimmy Walker, Matt Kuchar and Patrick Reed round out the possible pods.

Suddenly this outmanned, outgunned U.S. team looks pretty good, doesn’t it?

Cybergolf will run my preview next week. Meanwhile we’ll talk about this a lot on my Jay’s Plays Show on the Golf New Net Radio Network.
