NYC pub eschews Yankees for THE PLAYERS!

That’s right, a crowded Irish pub in Manhattan put the Yankee game on Yes Network on in the most distant TV in the bar, while all eyes were front and center on the PLAYERS. When they tried to change the channel to the baseball game, the entire place screamed to put it back on golf.  Don’t worry…they still luv ya, stripey boys.  BUt for four days, golf fans are more interested in The Players than May games against the Rangers and Mariners.
Go ahead..try and say the Players is not a major. When a whole bar in New York City (Patrick Conway’s located at 40 E. 43d St.) tells the hosts to send the Yankees packing in favor of the PLAYERS, you know it’s arrived as a major in the eyes of the rank and file golf fan.

Padraig Harrington said it – “Now there are five.” The fans were listening. Maybe if you don’t dig it, you’re simply preconditioned or afraid of change. Look at the list of winners. Look at one of the two greatest public courses in the USA. Most importantly, consider this: if we make THE PLAYERS a major – every person in America can come play a major venue.

Let’s do it for the fans. They keep raising ticket prices. Access to the players is limited. Corporate considerations seem to be driving the Tour. But here’s one way the fans can win. Make the PLAYERS a major and we all get TPC Sawgrass for ourselves forever…a public player’s Augusta.

Bar owner Ed Creed agrees. “Of course it’s a major. Look at all the people riveted to the screen. Look at the golf course. The place is phenomenal and can be played by anyone…ANYONE! Look at how it will bridge between The Masters and the U.S. Open. Look at the list of champions.” Creed is right. Sawgrass deserves it and so does Pete Dye. For all his contributions to golf, we should reward both Sawgrass and Dye with a permanent major. Sawgrass is arguably the most recognizable course in America.
It’s time, people. Let’s do it. When Yankee fans say no to the Yanks and yes to the PLAYERS, maybe it’s more like a major than we ever thought before. Think outside the box and watch the magic unfold.
