In Memoriam: American History Professor Jack Chatfield, Trinity College

chatfieldj

Not the best way to start Ryder Cup week or to celebrate my birthday, but my mentor, one of my advisors, and the man for whom I was a star pupil, Professor Jack Chatfield of Trinity College, passed away from cancer yesterday. For four decades he was, metaphorically, the entire American History faculty at the school and was unquestionably the whole Colonial America and Civil War era expert. We’ll go dark for today in honor of his memory, and as soon as I get word from Trinity as to memorial services, I’ll let everyone know. This was a colossal loss – he was downright iconic and a critical figure in the civil rights movement. A great light has gone out. We pay homage here to the men who taught us how to write.

Jack we will keep the fire burning here for you forever. Meanwhile have Kim Steele pour you a drink in Heaven and keep watch over the rest of us.

We’ll be back to golf tomorrow.
