FIFA World Cup Prep Update

Algeria drops to 1-5 in its last six matches as they fell to Ireland 3-0 last week. Maybe it’s the hideous lime green uniforms…or maybe it’s that the Desert Foxes haven’t played and practiced together enough in the last four months to gel as a squad. Look for 0-0-3 (remember, in soccer it’s not Win-Lose-Draw, it’s Win-Draw-Lose…), no points, early exit, see you in another 24 years. (The time since their last appearance…)

England missed a penalty kick and needed two own goals against Japan to escape with a 2-1 victory yesterday. They are in a penalty kick of a bracket with Algeria, the U.S. and Slovenia, and they are needing two own goals to beat Japan? Boy, Slovenia is looking better and better…

Speaking of the Dragons, Slovenia may be the surprise sleeper of Group C. They are playing the best soccer entering the tournament. My prediction for the U.S. is a 1-1-1 finish: a loss to England, a tie with Slovenia and a win against Algeria.

Hey! Who let the Drogs out?! Didier Drogba scored for Ivory Coast – who look like the Miami Dolphins in their melon, green and white unis – but the Elephants squandered a two goal lead against Paraguay as the teams finished tied 2-2.

El Tri (that’s Mexico) slaughtered non-qualifier Gambia 5-1. By the way…why does Mexico have all black uniforms this year?

France, a great team on paper, but a lousy one on grass, had to rally in the second half to salvage a 1-1 tie with Tunisia. (Quick…somebody cue up “Night in Tunisia” on the iPod.) Whatever happens to Les Bleus this Cup, it’s most certainly NOT coach Raymond Domenech’s fault, although the press will tell you otherwise. we kill coaches far too early in sports..and for far too little.

Cameroon and Slovakia played to a 1-1 draw Saturday.

Did you know? Spain has lost only once in their last 45 matches.
