Cybergolf Article: Jim Urbina to Restore NYS Tillinghast

Cybergolf reports that Jim Urbina, Tom Doak’s long-time chief lieutenant, will be restoring one of Tillinghast’s courses 30 minutes north of New York City. What was once called Dellwood Country Club will now be known as Paramount Country Club. According to the article:

Golf course architect Jim Urbina, who won raves for his role in creating Old Macdonald, the newest course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon, has devised a master plan for the prized A.W. Tillinghast-designed course. Urbina fell in love with the property when he visited for the first time last August. His primary goal is to restore the course to the true integrity of Tillinghast’s original 1920 design.

“You talk about a hidden gem, this course wasn’t listed in any book!” exclaims Urbina, who did a great deal of research before taking on the project. “But when it’s done, Paramount is going to open people’s eyes….”

….The golf course has been changed over the decades by the effects of nature and 90 years of play. Urbina and the new owners are dedicated to bringing it back to Tillinghast’s original vision, including the incorporation of some long-lost and rarely seen architectural elements..

The club has an interesting history dating back to its days as the weekend property of movie mogul and Paramount Pictures founder Adolph Zukor – also the former owner of the club – who used it to entertain celebrities back in the ’20s. It was quintessential American inventor Thomas Edison who introduced Zukor to Tillinghast.

Urbina is riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave of acclaim for his brilliant work at Old Macdonald – along with Tom Doak and George Bahto.
