Balloon Meet Pin, Americans Crash Out at FIDE World Chess Championship Candidates Tournament

UZBEKISTAN’S JAVOKIR SINDAROV DEFEATS AMERICA’S HIKARU NAKAMURA ON HIS WAY TO CAOTURING THE 2026 FIDE CANDIDATES TOURNAMENT IN A MAJOR UPSET.

The dream is postponed indefinitely; it will be at least another two years before Americans will have a chance to vie for the FIDE World Chess Championship. Americans Fabi Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura, the number 2 and 3 players in the world respectively were upset by 20-year old Uzbeki wunderkind Javokor Sindarov, who raced out to an early lead and dominated the tournament throughout.

After defeating Fabi with the white pieces in Round 4, Sindarov took sole possession of the lead and was never seriously threatened, finishing with a tournament record 10 points out of a possible 14 points. Russian born Anish Giri who plays for the NetherlandsĀ  finished a distant second with 8.5

Sindarov will now face India’s Gukesh Dommuraju on September for the world title. Sindarov is ranked number 5 in the world. Gukesh, who has been slumping terribly of late, has sunk to 9th.
