Merry Christmas!!! Have a happy, healthy, and holy holiday season!

And while the shephards lay in their field an angel of The Lord appeared to them and they were afraid. But he said “fear not for I bring you glad tidings of great joy. For today in the city of David a savior is born and he will save you from all your sins.” Then, suddenly the sky was filled with a great light and host of heavenly angels appeared and sang...

Golf Observer Reports David Fay Retires from U.S.G.A.

Sal Johnson of Golf Observer reports that the U.S.G.A. announced that David Fay retires as executive director effective December 31, 2010. It was widely known that Fay wanted to retire at the same time he turned 60 years old, which he did in October. He gave the U.S.G.A. 32 years of faithful, dedicated, graceful service. Mike Butz, the deputy executive director will...

In Memoriam: Sports Writer Joel Blumberg

While we don’t have details yet, sad news reached AWITP today. Seminal NYC sports writer and broadcaster Joel Blumberg died yesterday. He was a young guy, and this is a terrible shock to all the golf writing, basketball, and hockey families. He leaves behind his lovely wife Jill and young daughter Miranda.
Please keep their family in your prayers.

Week 16 NFL Picks

Another 3-1 week and 1-1 in teasers brings the season totals on my NFL picks to 39-17 and 17-11 in teasers. GREEN LIGHT! Jets at BEARS OVER 28.5 – Remember last week when 30 was the lowest number and we won with the over? We get a free 1.5 this week. Book it. Ravens +3 at BROWNS. Who owns who in this series? Ravens getting points…I ask you… AMBER...

2010 Jazzy Awards – Graeme McDowell, Player of the Year

In the interests of transparency, I publish my vote for Player of the Year each December. For the record, like my brethren in the BWAA, I will never cast a vote for a player under a cloud of suspicion for steroid/PED use. This year, Graeme McDowell made the quantum leap form potentially great player to major champion and Ryder Cup hero. It was a tough ballot. Jim...

Week 15 NFL Picks

After a 3-1 week, (1-1 in teasers) the season tally stands at 36-16 and 16-10 in teasers. From the “I’m stupid for picking that game” department, my only loss was the QB-less Chiefs who played more like Chefs against the Fighting Norvs. My bad…and it cost me a $30 lunch against Gary Schulz, who still owes me from the week before...

2010 Jazzy Awards – Best New Course, Old Macdonald

Tom Doak and George Bahto are collecting a lot of hardware this year for their terrific course at the Bandon Dunes Resort, Old Macdonald, a course that hearkens back to all the design concepts that C.B. Macdonald, Seth raynor, and Charles Banks all championed. Ran Morrissett has a terrific breakdown of the course at Golf Club Atlas. Doak has already collected the...

Week 14 NFL Picks and Analysis of Betting Trends

Interesting analysis this week in our picks. There were ten games – all based on point spread, not over-under – that all attracted me…but each one I was looking at the road team. And that set my Spider-sense tingling. Did you know that from 1983-2008 home favorites only won at a 47.56% clip? Visiting underdogs win at a 49.75%. 2.70% of the time, the...
