Weekend Open Thread: The FedEx Cup – Still not Right yet

Jim Furyk is in position to bag the kitten but let the cat escape. The FedEx Cup, with it’s tacky ten million dollar-ish grand prize, could end this year in an anti-climactic fizzle Furyk wins the Championship, but McIlroy coasts to the money…FUTURE money.

Personally I say buy a massive, jewel encrusted trophy and give that out…it’ll be more exciting (and less vulgar) than gobs of liquid cash. Snore-fest.

Golf is not auto racing. Moreover, the actuarial expertise needed to figure out all the permutations is just not available for us to figure everything out ourselves. Fans hate having to wait to be told what happened: you see a ball go in the stands, you know it’s a home run. You see a guy cross a line, you know it’s a touchdown. You see the ball/puck dent the twine, you know it’s a goal. But Rory birdied…now what?

“It is manufactured and it is slow speed,” noted golf expert Rodney Zilla. “There has to be a better way. It’s just not golf,” he says, echoing the thoughts of the rank and file who tolerate the FedEx Cup since its not as noxious a money grab as we feared, but they also treat it as the zoo baby it is.

Update: Oh Goody, Brent Sneakers may win. The Golf Gods are either asleep or messin with us.
