Sun Mountain Rain Suit Saves Round at National Golf Links of America

Recently, my friend and Trinity College colleague Mona Mennan got to play National Golf Links of America in 60 degrees and sunshine. Mere days later, I got 44, windy and rain all day. It was a steady drizzle: cold, wet and blustery. If we hadn’t been at National Golf Links of America, Charles Blair Macdonald’s masterpiece next to Shinnecock Hills, my playing partner and I would never have ventured out.

Thank goodness for my Sun Mountain rain suit. I have the “Provisional Suit,” which has a long sleeve jacket and pants. I bought it specifically for Ireland, Scotland, and other days when the weather could approach a monsoon or a snowstorm.

This is the second time it’s saved my bacon. Both my playing partner and I stayed dry and were able to finish all 18, although we needed a ten minute stop in the halfway house to do it. I was able to swing without restriction. The only drawback was I had to wear “zero gloves” which had no feeling in the short game and it was too cold to take them off. But while the day was miserable, we weren’t. We were able to soak in all the glory and genius that is the country’s greatest golf course, even in hellacious weather that only a fish would find enjoyable. I was even able to escape the infamous Road Hole bunker at the par-4 7th hole and sink the putt for a sandie. It also worked in a freezing rain storm in January at World Woods a few years ago.

A review of National Golf Links of America is coming soon. I will also return there soon to get better photos for everyone and to play in more clement weather.
