STRICT SECURITY MEASURES IN EFFECT FOR 2011 U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Far Hills, N.J. (June 7) – The security plan for the 2011 U.S. Open Championship at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., has been coordinated by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies with the goal of providing a safe environment for all attending the championship. Spectators attending the U.S. Open, to be played June 13-19, will experience increased security measures.
All general spectators traveling by car to the 2011 U.S. Open should follow event trail signs to general spectator parking located off I-270 in Gaithersburg at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds and the Crown Farm property.
For championship spectators traveling along I-95 and west of I-495 in Virginia, parking will be available in a reserved lot at Dulles International Airport. A parking pass will be required to utilize this parking option at Dulles. Any spectators in the local area or out-of-town spectators staying in Virginia should call the championship office prior to June 10 at (888) 823-4465 to obtain their parking pass. Shuttle buses from the parking area at Dulles will utilize the VA 267 Dulles Airport Access Road for a convenient shuttle ride to the golf course.
The USGA will operate approximately 275 shuttle buses from the three parking areas. That system will run continuously from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day and will drop off spectators in close proximity to the Main Admission Gate. All spectators should allow extra time as they will be required to pass through a screening process before boarding the shuttles at either location.
“There will be metal detection screening, similar to what you experience at airport security,” said Capt. Darryl McSwain of the Montgomery County Police Department, which is overseeing the law enforcement operations. “This screening process is designed to prevent spectators from bringing prohibited items onto the championship grounds. Our goal is to assure that everyone has a safe and an enjoyable experience at the U.S. Open.
“We encourage all spectators to review the list of prohibited items and secure those items in a safe place or leave them at home. Bringing them to a screening area will only prolong the admissions process,” said Capt. McSwain.
After passing through the screening process, spectators will board the shuttles to Congressional Country Club. Once arriving at Congressional, spectators must present a valid ticket or credential to enter the championship grounds. All U.S. Open tickets and credentials have a unique bar code that will be scanned at the admission gate.
Attendees utilizing alternative forms of transportation or coming to the U.S. Open from other parking locations will be required to go through an on-site security screening checkpoint prior to entering the championship grounds, with procedures identical to those at the spectator parking areas.
“Our security measures for the U.S. Open represent the collaborative efforts of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies,” said Dan Hoban, the USGA’s director of security. “With cooperation from championship attendees, we anticipate that these screening measures will add minimally to the time required to enter the championship grounds.”
The following is a list of prohibited items. These items are also listed on the back of each U.S. Open ticket:
No cell phones (including cell phones with photographic capabilities)
No PDAs and/or other portable email devices
No noise-producing electronic devices (including MP3 players)
No cameras and/or camcorders (other than Monday through Wednesday for personal non-commercial photographic use only and without their cases)
No bags larger than 8″W x 8″H x 8″D in their natural state
No cases and/or covers (such as chair or umbrella covers)
No signs, posters and/or banners
No televisions and/or radios unless provided by the USGA
No food and/or beverages
No containers and/or coolers
No pets (other than service animals)
No lawn and/or folding armchairs
No bicycles
No ladders and/or step-stools or other similar items
No metal-spiked golf shoes
No weapons (regardless of permit, including but not limited to, firearms or knives).
No other items deemed unlawful or dangerous by the USGA and/or championship security personnel in their sole discretion
