Pictures from Torrey Pines and the 2008 U.S. Open

Guys, something a little light while I finish my masters Preview for Cybergolf and the PGA:  some pix from Torrey.  I got a letter from an old friend from college asking to see what it’s like in the media tent covering a major.  A few bloggers asked me the same thing, so here ya go.  It’s actually quite the scene:  450 people make surprisingly little noise when they are working…

That’s Sal Johnson of Golf Observer, (via ABC Sports, Golf Magazine), on the left, and Jeff Shelley, (a direct descendant of mary Shelley!), of Cybergolf on the right.

Here’s a better view of the size of the press room. You’re looking at exactly the right half. Besides the thirty of so broadcats booths in the back that aren’t pictured here, there’s also a huge interview hall and separate dining facility. It’s huge because 450 journalists from across the globe have to file stories RIGHT NOW!

Anyway, here’s two more from Torrey. First, sunset on Sunday:

…and the morning of the playoff:

…and then a minute later, I got trampled by the entire herd, as the whole 30,000 person crowd followed the only group on the course down the 7th fairway. I felt like I was back at Nassau Coliseum in the ’80s waiting to get in for a concert. Apparently someone else felt the same way. We all got stuck in a crossway and someone started mooing. Note to the USGA, yes Torrey is pretty, but the canyons severely impact how much room you have for people on the golf course! Here’s my Friday piece from the Open, which explains more.

The Open at Torrey: No fairways? No greens? No problem!
