Well this is interesting. The Guinness book of World Records says the first round of golf was played at Musselburgh, (near Edinburgh).
According to the article:
“Documentary evidence proves “golf was played on Musselburgh Links as early as 2 March, 1672, although Mary, Queen of Scots, reputedly played here in 1567”.
The record is the documentary evidence found in the Account Book of Sir John Foulis of Ravelston.
In his entries the earliest game is 2 March, 1672.
This passage is referenced in the “The Golf Book Of East Lothian”, compiled and documented by John Kerr, the minister of Direlton, published in 1896.”
My guess is they should qualify that to “oldest recorded round.” Some people say the Dutch merchants actually taught the Scots to play when they came in for meetings. They’d land the ship at the dock, play “out” to Edinburgh for meetings, then play “in” to the ship.
Don’t ever say that in Scotland, though, unless you want them to put tripe in your haggis:), or give you a caber in the blackberries.
