Marino Parascenzo – Augusta National and the Majors of Golf

If there is anything better than turning down the sound on the Stephen A. Hole…err…Screamin A. Smith…err…Stephen A. Smith donkey show on ESPN, it’s turning him down for an epic read.  Meet Marino Parascenzo of Inside the Ropes.  Marino is one of the old guard, a former president of the Golf Writers Association of America and long-time sportswriter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  Go pull out any of the old U.S. Open media guides from the 80’s, you’ll find pieces in there by Marino.  They are invaluable to me in my major championship coverage.

I knew nothing about Winged Foot – holy smokes, there’s Marino’s piece in the 1984 guide sandwiched right between Art Spander’s work and Frank Hannigan’s article.  Need to know anything about Oakmont?  He wrote the first 100 years history.  Need a tale from long past?  Marino saw it and reported on it.

Well last night I read his terrific pieces about Cliff Roberts and Augusta National that graced the pages of The Majors of Golf in 2004, 2006 and 2007.  Brilliant work.  Here’s a link to Marino’s new web address, a terrific on-line golf ‘zine called Inside the Ropes, run by Tom Auclair and featuring work by his bright, diligent son and beautiful, charming daughter.
Gripping writer, charming guy, role model and great coach.  Yeah, when I get to be his age, he’s the guy I wanna be in the media tent.  Thanks Brother William!  Adso the Novice says welcome to The Honor Roll.
