Golf News: Karl McGinty, Lorne Rubenstein, Jeff Shelley

Four bits of golf news:

One of my favorites, Karl McGinty writes about Faldo and the European Ryder Cup team.

Lorne Rubenstein discusses Woods’s dominance over everyone and notes that today is Tiger’s thirty-second birthday.

Hey while we’re at it, I’ve been re-reading my Strunk and White:  The Elements of Style and want to do my part to promote proper grammar.   The first rule in the book is “Form the singular possessive of all nouns, even those ending in s by adding ‘s.  So in the preceding sentence, “Woods’s dominance” is the correct form.  According to S&W, the only time you use the s’ form is for plural nouns (for example, the nuns’ convent), or for ancient names (for example, Jesus’ cross).  So this morning when ESPN had a graphic showing “Woods’ record,” as usual, they botched the spelling.  It should have read Woods’s record.  However if they were talking about more than one Woods, (for example, the wedding of Tiger and Elin), it would read “The Woods’ Wedding.
Everybody got that?  Use s’s for singular, even if it ends in s:  Charles’s book, Burns’s poems, unless it’s plural or ancient as in “Isis’ throne.”  Back to live action…

Jeff Shelley of Cybergolf, who has saved my grammatical bacon on several occasions, writes this piece about Christmas at his club.
