ESPN tries to tell you how to think about steroids in golf

John Anderson began ESPN’s “newscast” – if you can call SportsCenter that anymore – of the PGA TOUR’s adopting a steroids testing policy with this extra bit of window dressing.  Always remember, he’s not reporting the story, he’s telling you how to think:

“The ball is juiced and the drivers are hot,” but the players “will be clean.”

So read between the lines with me.  We’re supposed to think that 185 yard wedges out of the four-inch rough are the product of the ball, the clubs, the grooves, the exercise regimen, anything but *gasp* not steroids.

ESPN is again trying to downplay the dangers of and widespread use of steroids.  They should have merely reported that the Tour approved testing, but they had to get the dig in there about the ball and the clubs…anything to distract you from the true scourge of our time.

There is no point in sugar-coating it any more.  ESPN is selling steroids to your kids…one “SportsCenter” broadcast and one magazine issue at a time.
