Book Review – Golf Architecture, A Worldwide Perspective Vol. Six

IMG_20131018_091749_199

It’s a banner day here at AWITP and Cybergolf, as I have become a published print author yet again. Full Swing Golf Publishing and Paul Daley have released Golf Course Architecture: A Worldwide Perspective Volume Six, and my chapter on the Links Course at Lawsonia is prominently featured.

Daley does a phenomenal job of covering the globe in each volume of this series. In this volume golf courses from every continent except Antarctica are analyzed, including such rarities as Royal Isabela in Puerto Rico, Carya in Turkey, Cruden Bay in Scotland, Oxford Club in India, Sagebrush in Canada, Royal Golf Club of Bahrain, and several in Daley’s home country of Australia.

For those of us closer to home, some of the greatest American public courses are profiled including Tom Doak’s brilliant Old Macdonald at Bandon Dunes Resort, Ron Forse’s astounding restoration of Langford and Moreau’s Lawsonia Links in Wisconsin, and Dan Hixson’s stratospherically good Wine Valley outside Walla Walla, Washington. On the private side, one can study old classics such as Kyle Phillips’s outstanding restoration of Alister Mackenzie’s California Golf Club of San Francisco or new designs like Jack Nicklaus’s course at Dismal River deep in the Nebraska sand hills.

A broad array of architects’ work is explored from Colt & Alison, Mackenzie, Alex Russell, James Braid, and C.B Macdonald to the modern thoughts of contributing architect authors Lester George, Jeff Mingay, Dr. Michael Hurdzan, and Mike DeVries. There are even fascinating pieces by Dunlop White III on the new USGA Architecture Archives and Tony Ristola on his critical tenets of golf course design.

To order a copy now, before international distribution through retail channels, email Paul Daley directly at fswing@bigpond.net.au. It makes a perfect addition to any sports library and a great gift to any golf lover.
