Bloodletting at the Match Play

***UPDATE*** Holy smokes are O’Hern and Woods having a donnybrook!  O’Hern up FOUR HOLES…a lead I told a colleague was “insurmountable normally in match play” and now Woods looks to exact a nasty revenge…he’s still down one with five to play, but…

ORIGINAL POST:

Seven of the top eight seeds are out at the Match Play. That makes March Madness look positively tame. Well, except for Tiger being the one. Why worry? As long as he wins today, he’ll be on TV for the weekend…”hopefully two rounds tomorrow” crow the TV suits.

Would YOU like to be Nick O’Hern today? I sure wouldn’t. Tiger is probably chomping at the bit to get REVENGE…capitalized…for the 2005 match where O’Hern upended him. Can you imagine if he wins again? Can you see the headlines? “Tiger tamer!!!”

Meanwhile, Shaun Micheel…a terrific interview by the way, great to talk xs and os with…is showing a remarkable resurgence. A 16 seed made it to the “Sweet Sixteen.”

The Player Bracket looks uninspiring. I like David Toms, but it is kinda like rooting for your housecat, he’s so mellow and everyone forgets about him until you actually see him and then you get a warm, fuzzy and reach for the “Pounce.”  Meanwhile Campbell and Cink have made careers winning things no one remembers…except for that hullaballoo at Harbour Town with Ted Purdy, that was a mess. I’d be less impressed with Stephen Ames, but he won last year at Sawgrass, one of the few odd champions there.

Finally, Geoff Ogilvy is quietly having another great tournament so far.
