Bummer – Golf For Women Closing

Conde Nast has decided to discontinue Golf For Women just hours after its editor-in-chief left to edit Oprah’s O magazine.

This is disappointing for two reasons.  First only tennis has the cross gender appeal of golf.  No other sport has as dedicated a following.  I know many of us rail at the sky when gender warriors try to use golf to advance a social agenda, but putting them aside, name one other sports where men and women watch each other’s tour with as much fervor.  Only tennis rivals golf for a man’s attention on television:  not skating, skiiing, not basketball, not soccer.  Week in and week out, we at least pay attention to who won or how our favorite player did.

Just ask some guy to name his favorite WNBA superstar.  Go ahead, see if you get an answer.   ***cricket, cricket, cricket!***

Now ask him to name his favorite female golfer. (Paula Creamer, then Morgan Pressel, then Nat).

It’s also a bummer because two of my favorite writers are now out of a gig.  Golf Girl and Golf Chick were two good reasons to read GFW.  Oh well, I like Kristen’s idea…form a team of female bloggers.

How about this…Golf Chick, Golf Girl, Golf Babes, and Chix with Sticks team up…maybe add one more…call it “The Fivesome” and alternate entries every weekday.  One cover fashion, one cover pro tours, one cover courses and travel, one cover equipment, one cover…something else…catch all.  I’d sure as heck read that.  Women’s Golf is interesting, moreso when one person isn’t dominating the conversation.

Anyway, I’m sorry things there didn’t work out, but hey, they picked you because you write well and were showing promise.  The experience had to be good for you as well.  Every setback is just another chance to triumph over adversity, so lets see the next thing!  I know it’ll be good.
