John Daly Changes Mind, Will Skip 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush

Ryan Ballengee at Golf News Net reports that John Daly has reversed himself. After stating last week that he would play the Open Championship at Royal Portrush despite not being allowed a golf cart by the R&A, Daly has, instead, withdrawn. Instead, he will play the PGA Tour’s opposite field event, the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky.

Ballengee wrote: “The PGA Tour has granted the right to use a cart to players with legitimate claims under the ADA, and their PGA Tour Champions routinely allows 50-plus players on that circuit to compete using carts. According to Golf World, the PGA Tour has granted Daly’s request to use a cart in this event.

A grateful and excited Kevin Streelman will take his place.

“Yes, please! Here we go!” he Tweeted and texted.

Ballenge also ponders whether a spider bite may have aided Daly’s decision. Daly was bitten while on vacation in England last week, and had to be rushed to a hospital for treatment.
