Golf Observer blog has breakdown of record front-9s and other great stats

Sal Johnson of Golf Observer has some great stats and analysis of the first round.  Click here for the Golf Observer blog.

“If you’re wondering about the chances of a first round leader after nine holes winning:

“Since World War II, ten Masters champions have shot the low opening nine-hole score and gone on to win. Last year Trevor Immelman shot 34 along with eight others….Previously the last time it happened was in 2003 when Mike Weir shot 34 and was tied with three others….Chad Campbell [made] birdie on 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5. In the history of the Masters nobody has ever opened like this….Previously the best start at the Masters was by Ken Venturi who birdied the first 4 holes and went on to shot a first round 66 going on to finish the tournament 2nd. Now in Masters history someone else has opened his round with birdies on the first five holes and that was Thomas Bjorn in the 2nd round. He went on to shoot 67 and finished the week T18th.

After Campbell’s great start he kept things going shooting 31 on the front night and he tied four others for the best first nine holes in the Masters.”
